Transport fares increase on Accra-Anloga-Keta route by 20%

Transport Fares from Accra to Anloga and Keta have seen a 20 per cent increase, effective Thursday, April 11, 2024. Mr. Rolex Agbey Miheso, Chairman of the Accra-Anloga-Keta branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), explained to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that this increase serves as an interim solution to support drivers while awaiting an official announcement.

According to Mr. Miheso, a scheduled meeting with the Minister and other stakeholders could not take place as planned, prompting the leadership to take this initiative to support its members. He indicated that the fares might eventually be adjusted to around 30 to 40 per cent.

Passengers have confirmed paying Gh¢70 instead of the usual Gh¢60 for the Accra to Anloga-Keta trips, reflecting the fare increase.

In response to the fare adjustment, the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have jointly advised commuters against paying any unapproved fares until an official announcement is made. This advice comes after the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana announced a 30 per cent increase in fares effective Saturday, April 13.

A press release issued by the GPRTU and the GRTCC attributes the decision to increase fares by transport operators to the government's failure to adequately address their grievances. The situation underscores the need for effective communication and resolution of issues between stakeholders to ensure a fair and transparent transport system.
