NDC opts out of Ejisu by-election, Ishmael Alhassan says

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made a strategic decision not to contest in the upcoming by-Election in the Ejisu Constituency, scheduled for April 30, 2024. The constituency seat became vacant following the passing of John Ampontuah Kumah, the Member of Parliament for the area, on March 7, 2024, after a brief illness.

It's widely acknowledged that the Ejisu Constituency is considered a stronghold for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), prompting the NDC's decision to abstain from the race. The party leadership has emphasized that their focus is on the general elections scheduled for December.

According to Ishmael Alhassan, the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the NDC, the party has opted out of the by-election due to concerns about the allocation of resources. Alhassan expressed, “We don't want to benefit from [John Kumah's] death. Looking at the time frame, if the Electoral Commission does not conduct the election before May, any political party who contests this election is just causing financial loss to the party.”

He further clarified, “We are winning the election for His Excellency John Mahama, so any preparation that we have is geared towards the December election, and that is our focus.”

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has announced that the by-election for the Ejisu constituency will proceed on April 30, 2024. The NPP is currently in the process of selecting a new candidate for the by-election, with nine aspirants cleared to contest the party's Parliamentary primary scheduled for the upcoming Saturday, April 14, 2024.
