Transport unions increase fares due to rising fuel prices, effective April 13

Two prominent Transport unions in Ghana, namely the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and the Transport Operators of Ghana, have jointly announced an increase in transport fares, effective Saturday, April 13, 2024. This decision comes in response to the recent surge in petroleum prices, which has significantly impacted the operating costs of transport services.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 8, 2024, the two unions outlined the details of the fare adjustments. They have implemented a 15 per cent increase for short-distance or intracity transport, and a 20 per cent increase for intercity or long-journey transport. Additionally, taxi services will see a 15 per cent hike in fares, with the fare for short-distance taxi services rising from GH¢ 10.00 to GH¢ 15.00.

The unions cited the lack of government intervention in reducing Fuel Prices, vehicle spare parts, and lubricants as contributing factors to their decision. Despite ongoing economic challenges, they expressed disappointment in the government's perceived indifference towards addressing these issues, which has further exacerbated the financial strain on transport owners and drivers.

The decision to raise fares underscores the financial difficulties faced by transport operators and drivers, who are grappling with rising operational costs amidst stagnant or declining income levels. As fuel prices continue to escalate and economic conditions remain challenging, the unions have taken this step to ensure the sustainability of their operations and livelihoods.
