Ghana Tertiary Education Commission cracks down on satellite campuses in SHSs

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has taken action to halt the operation of Satellite Campuses of universities in senior high schools (SHSs) and unapproved premises. The Director-General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, expressed concerns about the proliferation of these campuses, stating that they hinder the growth and development of technical universities.

At the 12th congregation of the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU), Prof. Jinapor emphasized the negative impact of satellite campuses on technical universities' progress. He disclosed that GTEC had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with affected universities, outlining a four-year plan to phase out existing students from these campuses.

Following the completion of current students' programs, universities will be prohibited from admitting new students to these satellite campuses. GTEC will conduct a comprehensive audit to ensure compliance with quality standards before accrediting self-owned satellite campuses.

Prof. Jinapor announced that GTEC had reached agreements with six institutions to stop admitting students to approximately 210 satellite campuses. This move aims to enhance teaching quality and enable technical universities to attract more students, contributing to socio-economic development.

BTU's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, highlighted the introduction of 17 new academic programs, including Master of Science (MSc) programs in agriculture. He mentioned plans to extend Competence Based Training (CBT) to all programs up to HND level, sponsored by GIZ and the World Bank.

The outgoing Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, affirmed the government's commitment to STEM education and technical universities' role in national development. He urged stakeholders to support the government's efforts to advance technical education, crucial for industrialization and national transformation.
