Community urged to protect children from forced marriage

Mr. Evans Ghansah, an Assistant Social Development Officer, has issued a heartfelt appeal to parents, urging them to refrain from coercing their Children, particularly girls, into marriage. He emphasized that such actions were not only morally wrong but also illegal, citing the Children's Act, 1998 (Act 560), which explicitly prohibits forcing a child into marriage.

Speaking at a child protection engagement event held in Dzindziso, a farming Community in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region, Mr. Ghansah underscored the importance of upholding the minimum age for marriage, which should be 18 years. He reminded attendees that any violation of this law constituted a criminal offense, punishable by fines or imprisonment.

Mr. Ghansah passionately urged participants to prioritize the protection of children from neglect, violence, abuse, and discrimination of all forms. He emphasized that every child deserved equal treatment and opportunities, regardless of their background or status, and should be provided with basic rights such as education, shelter, and food.

Highlighting the importance of parental responsibility, Mr. Ghansah encouraged parents to nurture their children's talents and ensure their well-being. He reminded the community of children's inherent rights, including access to education and recreational activities, which should be upheld at all times.

Mr. Ebenezer Ahiabor, Chairman of the Dzindziso community Child Protection Committee, commended the education team for their efforts in sensitizing the community on child protection issues. His words echoed the collective responsibility shared by communities in safeguarding the rights and welfare of children.
