Gomoa Central DCE denies allegations of rejecting expired medicines

Mr. Benjamin Kojo Otoo, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa Central, has refuted claims made against him and Member of Parliament (MP) Mrs. Naana Eyiah Quansah regarding the alleged rejection of expired medicines.

The accusations were levelled by Mr. Kwame Obeng Asare, also known as A Plus, an independent aspiring MP for Gomoa Central in the upcoming 2024 election. A Plus had accused Mr. Otoo and Mrs. Quansah of collaborating with the Gomoa Obuasi Health Director to reject donated medicines deemed expired.

Addressing the media at Gomoa Afransi, Mr. Otoo dismissed these allegations as unfounded, labelling them as “outrageous, malicious, and evil.” He clarified that neither he nor the MP coerced the Health Director into rejecting the medicines.

Mr. Otoo emphasized the professionalism of the medical personnel at the Gomoa Obuasi Directorate, asserting their prerogative to decline expired drugs that could pose risks to patients. He stated that the facility requested a detailed list of donated medicines from A Plus to select suitable ones for use, but this request was denied.

Upon inspection, it was found that some of the donated drugs were labelled in Dutch, with none of the medical staff proficient in the language for proper interpretation. Additionally, Mr. Otoo revealed that certain medicines had expired as early as 2022 and 2023.

The DCE underscored the district's need for quality medical supplies and equipment to enhance healthcare delivery. He called for public and individual support to bolster the capacity of the health directorate to provide excellent healthcare services to the community.
