Veronica Obeng’s Guinness World Record attempt progresses steadily

Ms. Veronica Obeng is currently undertaking a remarkable endeavour to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest reading marathon. After completing 53 hours of her six-day challenge, she remains determined to achieve her goal.

The read-a-thon commenced at the Aburi Botanical Gardens in the Eastern Region, with Ms Obeng initiating her attempt at 1900 hours on Sunday, March 24. Throughout the marathon, numerous patrons have visited the location to offer their support and encouragement.

Ms Obeng, an accountant and TV show host, expressed her unwavering resolve to overcome obstacles and complete the mission, crediting her team for their invaluable support. Despite the unexpected challenges, she remains committed to adhering to the Guinness World Record guidelines and extending her stay at the botanical gardens beyond the initial end date of Monday, April 1, 2024.

Throughout the marathon, Ms. Obeng aims to read a diverse selection of books, with a particular focus on works by African writers. She hopes to not only achieve global recognition for local authors but also inspire a culture of reading, especially among the younger generation.

As the Managing Partner of Africa Must Read, a non-profit organization, Ms. Obeng views the read-a-thon as an opportunity to promote literacy and support the books and publishing industry. Through her foundation's initiatives, including the establishment of reading clubs and social events, she aims to improve lives and communities across Africa.

The current record for the longest reading marathon stands at 124 hours, held by Rysbai Isakov of Kyrgyzstan. Ms. Obeng's determined efforts signify a commendable endeavour to surpass this milestone and make a meaningful impact in the world of literature.
