Illegal miners destroying roads in Nabdam

The Gane Asonge-Pelungu Feeder Road in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region is facing destruction due to the activities of illegal gold miners. These miners are collecting surface gravel from the road, leaving it bare and prone to erosion, particularly during the rainy season. This poses risks to road users, especially drivers and riders, and increases the likelihood of accidents, particularly at night.

The road, spanning 7.5 kilometers, serves as a major link between Bolgatanga, the capital of the region, and important locations such as the Pelungu Market, the largest market in the district. During a visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the area, it was observed that significant portions of the road's surface gravel had been removed, particularly near Zanlerigu Junior High School.

Motorists expressed concern over the destructive activities of the illegal miners, noting the worsening condition of the already deplorable road with numerous potholes. Some described the miners as “blood suckers” who prioritize their pursuit of gold over the safety and well-being of others.

Nurse Felicia Ayaaba, a road user, emphasized the urgent need to halt the Illegal Mining Activities to prevent further consequences. She urged community members and authorities to take immediate action, as the destruction of the road poses a significant threat to lives.

Isaac Wulug, the Assembly Member of the Zanlerigu-Dagliga Electoral Area, acknowledged previous efforts to address the issue but stressed the need for collective action from the community to combat illegal mining. He also called for government intervention to improve the road's condition, suggesting that proper construction and tarring would deter illegal activities.

District Chief Executive Agnes Anamoo pledged to address the issue, stating that she would work with the police to stop illegal mining activities on the road. She also committed to addressing the road's condition through government initiatives.
