Atua Government Hospital laundry block abandoned for over 10 years

Construction works on the Laundry block of the Atua Government Hospital in the Eastern Region have been stalled for over a decade, causing significant inconvenience and impacting healthcare services.

Initiated over 10 years ago under the leadership of former Member of Parliament Mr Michael Teye Nyaunu, the project has been neglected, with no signs of progress or a clear plan for its completion.

Despite repeated attempts to seek information from hospital management, they declined to comment without prior approval from the Ghana Health Service. However, an anonymous source at the hospital revealed that the lack of progress on the project has led to a shortage of laundry space, affecting their services.

Hospital laundry services play a critical role in sorting, cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting used linen to ensure patient comfort and prevent infections. However, due to the unfinished project, the hospital has been forced to operate in a small room with limited resources, including using a domestic washing machine that prolongs the laundry process.

Hospital officials believe that completing the project would greatly enhance their laundry services by providing dedicated spaces for washing, drying, and ironing, as well as office space for staff.

Despite promises from incumbent Member of Parliament Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi to establish a laundry facility for the hospital in 2014, little progress has been made, leaving the hospital staff and patients in need of urgent support.

The hospital appeals to stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and non-governmental organizations, to provide assistance to expedite the completion of the laundry facility and improve healthcare services for the community.
