Teachers in Tema metropolis strike over unaddressed demands from Ministry of Education

Teachers in public schools across the Tema Metropolis initiated a Strike action on Thursday, led by three Teacher unions, to demand action from the Ministry of Education regarding their conditions of service.

The strike, organized by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh), aims to address issues such as the lack of a negotiated collective agreement and the incomplete distribution of laptops to all teachers.

During a visit to several schools in Tema by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), it was observed that most teachers were absent from their posts, leaving classrooms and staff rooms deserted.

At Akodzo Junior High School, for instance, only the headteacher was present, conducting classes for Form Three pupils, while pupils in other forms engaged in activities on their own due to the absence of their teachers.

Similar scenes were reported at Twedaase JHS and Padmore Basic School, where some teachers were present but not engaged in teaching activities.

Mr. Abednego Tettey Nuertey, Chairman of GNAT, explained that some teachers were at school for a head count by the Accountant General's Department, which began before the strike was declared. However, he urged all teachers to participate in the strike to push for improvements in their working conditions.

Mr. Nuertey highlighted the issue of incomplete laptop distribution, noting that while junior and senior high school teachers had received their laptops, those in the primary sector were still waiting. Additionally, office staff had not received laptops either.

The strike action underscores the teachers' determination to ensure their concerns are addressed by the Ministry of Education, with a focus on fair treatment and improved working conditions.
