Fair Wages Commission urges striking Teacher Unions to return to negotiation table

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has urged the three striking Teacher Unions to resume negotiations for a swift conclusion on conditions of service, aiming to resolve concerns raised by the unions.

The Commission emphasized the importance of addressing the four out of 16 concerns raised by the Teacher Unions, urging both parties to engage in constructive dialogue to reach an agreement. This call comes after the announcement of an indefinite strike by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-Ghana) on Wednesday, March 20.

At a press briefing in Accra, Mr. Benjamin Arthur, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Commission, expressed disappointment with the timing of the strike, emphasizing that engagement between the parties was crucial for progress. He reiterated the Commission's commitment to negotiation and invited the unions to return to the negotiation table for further discussions.

Mr. Arthur highlighted the significant progress made in negotiations and expressed hope for a swift resolution if both parties continued their engagement. He emphasized the Commission's readiness to conclude negotiations by Thursday, March 20, and called on the Teacher Unions to reconsider their decision to strike.

The Teacher Unions had cited delays in negotiations on their Collective Agreement, including issues such as allowances, distribution of laptops, and the implementation of a functional Scheme of Service by the Ghana Education Service (GES), as reasons for the industrial action.

The CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission urged the leadership of the Teacher Unions to call off the strike to facilitate ongoing engagement. He reassured parents and pupils nationwide of the Commission's commitment to finding a lasting solution to the impasse, urging for calm during this period of negotiation and dialogue.
