International Justice Mission (IJM) responds to BBC Africa Eye child trafficking documentary allegations

International Justice Mission (IJM) has addressed the allegations of child trafficking made against the organization by Bbc Africa Eye in a recent documentary.

IJM Ghana, which has been actively combatting child trafficking on Lake Volta since 2015, expressed deep concern over the allegations and emphasized its commitment to evaluating and improving its policies and practices.

The Bbc Africa Eye documentary claimed that Ghanaian children were taken from their homes in an operation allegedly supported by IJM.

The report also suggested that IJM had removed children from their families in cases with limited evidence of trafficking, possibly influenced by a target-driven culture within the organization.

Regarding the specific cases mentioned in the documentary, IJM maintains that it was transparent with the police and provided accurate information.

“No IJM Ghana staff member has been disciplined or dismissed for failure to meet victim relief targets,” the statement said.

The Department of Social Welfare determined that certain children were not safe with their grandmother, and alternative arrangements were made for their well-being.

IJM conducted a thorough internal investigation into the allegations and found material inaccuracies in the BBC's claims. The organization remains dedicated to protecting children's welfare and continuously strives to enhance its policies and practices.

BBC Africa Eye initiated the investigation based on concerns surrounding IJM's work in Ghana and deployed an undercover reporter within the organization.

IJM's response maintains that protecting children's welfare is a fundamental aspect of their work in Ghana.
