Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre recognized as Africa’s premier centre of excellence for women, peace, and security

Madam Mme Bineta Diop, the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security, has hailed the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) as the leading Centre of Excellence in Africa.

During a visit to the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Executive Management Committee of KAIPTC met with Madam Diop to strengthen collaboration between the organizations.

Highlighting the significance of KAIPTC's work in peace and security, particularly regarding women, Madam Diop emphasized, “KAIPTC is the number one Centre of Excellence in Africa that is recognized by the African Union Commission and globally.”

She further expressed her trust in the Center, revealing that her first training session upon assuming office at the African Union was conducted by KAIPTC in Accra, Ghana.

Recognizing the crucial roles played by women in peace and security, Madam Diop commended KAIPTC for its commitment to gender mainstreaming and reinforcing the women, peace, and security agenda in Africa.

She reiterated the Commission's dedication to collaborating closely with the Center, emphasizing their desire to acquire further expertise and knowledge on women's perspectives on peace and security.

Major General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant of KAIPTC, stated that the purpose of the visit was to enhance engagement and cooperation with the African Union Commission.

He emphasized the upcoming phase of the Center, which will prioritize the inclusion of women and youth. To underscore the significance of women and youth in peacebuilding processes, KAIPTC plans to elevate the Women, Peace and Security Unit to a department, incorporating a dedicated youth component.

Ms Horname Noagbesenu, Director of the Policy Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Department (PPMED) at KAIPTC, shared insights into the Center's strategic plan for the years 2024 to 2028. She mentioned ongoing discussions and consultations with key partners to address critical issues and emerging trends, shaping the Center's future strategy.

Ms Noagbesenu highlighted the Center's work in the areas of peace and security, including the Continental Results Framework, which has proven its importance through the implementation of National Action Plans related to women, peace, and security.

Moving forward, KAIPTC aims to focus on gender-based violence, the implementation of the Maputo Protocol, and addressing the impact of climate change on women. The Center aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice to enhance the role of women in society.

Ms Noagbesenu emphasized the importance of synergistic approaches to address the challenges faced by women and youth in communities.

Through its continued efforts and collaborations, KAIPTC strives to maintain its status as a Center of Excellence in Africa and contribute significantly to promoting peace, security, and the empowerment of women on the continent.
