NPP’s defeat in Assin North by-election reflects democracy at work – NPP National Organizer Nana B

Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), shared his perspective on the party's defeat in the Assin North by-election.

Nana B described the outcome as a resounding democratic statement by the people of Assin North.

Despite the NPP's vigorous efforts to win the seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the constituents exercised their constitutional rights and decided to retain James Gyakye Quayson, who had his name expunged from Parliament's records following a Supreme Court ruling on May 17.

Nana B acknowledged that the NDC's victory in the by-election is not an uncommon occurrence but rather a testament to Ghana's democratic growth.

He emphasized that the result should not be seen as a precursor to the NDC's success in the 2024 elections, highlighting that similar projections were made for the Kumawu by-election where the NPP emerged victorious with a larger margin.

Refuting claims of defeat being a trend for the NPP, Nana B recalled how political pundits had anticipated a low voter turnout and even a potential loss for the NPP in Kumawu due to economic challenges. However, the party's triumph defied expectations and demonstrated the unpredictable nature of elections.

The Npp National Organizer saw the outcome as a wake-up call for his party, signalling the need to reassess their campaign strategies.

Despite their commitment to running a robust campaign in Assin North, the people's verdict was loud and clear in favour of Gyakye Quayson.

Nana B concluded by reiterating that democracy had spoken emphatically on election day. While the defeat may sting, it is an integral part of the democratic process and serves as a reminder for the NPP to redouble their efforts in engaging with constituents and addressing their concerns.
