Paediatric Society of Ghana donates phototherapy unit to Peki Government Hospital

The Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG) has made a significant contribution to neonatal healthcare by donating a highly intensive phototherapy unit to the Peki Government Hospital in the Volta Region.

The donation is part of PSG's One Region, One Set of Phototherapy Equipment Initiative aimed at improving healthcare for newborns across the country.

A phototherapy unit is a crucial piece of equipment used to treat jaundice in newborns, preventing disability and potential death.

Dr Charlyne Kilba, the Treasurer of PSG and Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital presented the phototherapy unit on behalf of PSG's national executives.

Dr Kilba commended the team from Peki for their outstanding advocacy efforts during the jaundice awareness month.

In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr Kilba emphasized the significance of the equipment, highlighting that it is PSG's first factory-made phototherapy unit.

The addition of this unit will contribute to the success story of “Stopping disability and death” associated with neonatal jaundice.

The 2023 Newborn Jaundice Awareness Month, also known as the Yellow Month, was observed in May with the theme “Spot the Yellow, Stop Disability and Death.”

The awareness campaign encouraged parents to seek immediate professional help upon spotting any signs of newborn jaundice in their babies.

The month-long campaign included various activities such as health walks, community engagements, training for health workers, media interactions, and educational sessions at healthcare facilities to raise awareness about newborn jaundice, its causes, preventive measures, and the importance of timely medical interventions.

Dr Daniel Okyere Koranteng, the Medical Superintendent of Peki Government Hospital, expressed his deep appreciation to PSG for the timely donation.

He acknowledged the rising admissions for newborn jaundice at the facility, making the phototherapy unit an invaluable asset in their efforts to provide quality care to newborns in need.
