Medeama SC is Ghana Premier League 2023 champions, clinch title with 3-0 victory over Tamale City

Medeama Sporting Club made history on Sunday, June 11, as they secured their first-ever Ghana Premier League title with a convincing 3-0 win against Tamale City at Akoon Park.

Heading into the final game of the season, Medeama only needed a draw to claim the league title, having already established a three-point lead at the top of the table. However, a remarkable hattrick by Jonathan Sowah ensured a resounding victory for Evans Adotey's side and sealed their championship triumph.

Sowah wasted no time, opening the scoring just six minutes into the match, setting the stadium alight with excitement. He then doubled his tally in the 67th minute, putting Medeama in a commanding position. With 14 minutes remaining, Sowah completed his hattrick, securing the victory and simultaneously condemning Tamale City to relegation.

The mining city of Tarkwa erupted into jubilant celebrations as Medeama SC claimed the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League title in emphatic fashion. Referee Eric Owusu Peprah's final whistle triggered scenes of joy among players, officials, and supporters, marking a defining moment for the club in Ghanaian football.

While Medeama savored their success, the defeat dealt a blow to Tamale City, as they suffered relegation after just one season in the topflight. Tamale City joined Kotoku Royals and King Faisal as the bottom three teams relegated to the Division One League.

Medeama entered the match knowing that a draw would be enough to secure the title. However, they approached the game with an aggressive mindset, as their opponents desperately needed a victory to avoid relegation and potentially impact the destination of the league trophy in favor of title rivals Bechem United. Bechem United's 0-1 loss to Aduana Stars confirmed Medeama as the champions, finishing the league with 60 points from 34 matches, six points ahead of Bechem United.

Coach Evans Adotey's side wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking an early lead through Joshua Agyemang, who expertly finished Kwadwo Amoako's cross. Despite Tamale City's efforts to rally, Medeama's solid defense thwarted their scoring chances.

In the 67th minute, Jonathan Sowah further extended Medeama's lead with a powerful header from a well-taken corner by Theophilus Anoba. The goal sent the crowd into ecstatic celebrations, sensing the imminent championship victory. Sowah continued to shine, scoring a magnificent goal nine minutes later. With a brilliant combination with Derrick Fordjour, Sowah created space for himself before unleashing a long-range shot into the top corner, sealing the 3-0 victory and completing Medeama's remarkable run of ten consecutive home wins.

Following the match, Ghana Football Association President Kurt Simeon-Okraku, alongside FA officials and corporate partners, presented the league trophy to Medeama captain Kwasi Donsu, as well as championship medals to the players and technical staff of the newly-crowned champions.

Medeama SC's triumph marks a historic milestone for the club, propelling them to the high table of Ghanaian football as one of the 11 clubs (excluding the defunct Real Republicans) to have won the league title.
