Assemblyman calls for re-opening of Asukawkaw Steel Bridge tollbooth to prevent accidents

Mr Mark Oduro, the Assemblyman of Asukawkaw Electoral Area, is urging the Minister of Roads and Highways to re-open the tollbooth at Asukawkaw in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

His call comes in response to the frequent accidents occurring on the steel Bridge in the area.

Mr Oduro observed that the reinstatement of the tollbooth would serve as a temporary measure to compel drivers to reduce their speed when approaching the steel bridge.

He emphasized that the absence of the tollbooth has led to drivers speeding across the bridge, disregarding its slippery nature, particularly during rainy conditions, and contributing to a series of accidents.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Assemblyman suggested that bringing back the toll would serve as a warning to motorists and other road users, encouraging them to limit their speed.

Mr Oduro expressed concern about the condition of the bridge, stating that the bolts, nuts, and metal plates intended to prevent slipperiness have now become a death trap for road users and travellers crossing the Asukawkaw Steel Bridge.

He warned that if the authorities fail to address the deteriorating state of the bridge, it may soon collapse.

He appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority, Oti Regional Minister, and Krachi East Municipal Assembly to prioritize the renovation of the bridge, as it serves as a crucial link between the area and the southern and northern parts of the country.

According to checks conducted by the GNA, there have been over seven accidents on the bridge from January to May 2023, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

The GNA previously reported on March 20, 2019, about the deplorable condition of the bridge, drawing attention to the Ghana Highway Authority.

However, the necessary repairs have yet to be carried out, leading commuters to persistently voice their concerns about the need for repair works.
