Government plans to replace textbooks with laptops in senior high schools, says Vice President Dr Bawumia

The Ministry of Education, under the guidance of the government, is preparing to introduce laptops as a replacement for textbooks in Senior High Schools (SHS) across Ghana.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made this announcement during the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School (HEPSS).

According to Dr. Bawumia, the laptops will be equipped with textbooks and other teaching materials to enhance the learning experience for students. The implementation of this initiative is expected to take place before the end of 2023.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the objective of this initiative is to prepare students to adapt to the globalized world. Recognizing the importance of investing in education, he stated, “If this country must move forward in the right direction, we must invest in education which is the only platform for preparing nation builders for tomorrow.”

He further revealed that the Minister for Education has assured him of the plan to commence the replacement of textbooks with laptops embedded with educational resources in SHSs this year.

This development follows the launch of the One-teacher One-laptop project on September 3, 2021, by the government. The project aimed to provide SHS teachers with modern tools to facilitate teaching and learning. As of December 11, 2021, the Ghana Education Service reported that 80% of the laptops designated for teachers had already been distributed.

The introduction of laptops in SHSs as a replacement for textbooks signifies a significant step towards embracing digital education and enhancing access to educational resources. This move is expected to revolutionize the learning environment, promoting interactive and engaging teaching methods for students across the country.
