High Court dismisses Anas’ GH¢25m defamation suit against Kennedy Agyapong

The Accra High Court has dismissed the GH¢25 million defamation suit brought by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

In his ruling, Justice Eric Baah stated that Anas failed to prove that Agyapong defamed him by airing the documentary “Who watches the watchman?” and that the documentary rather exposed shady deals involving Anas and his associates.

Anas sued Agyapong in 2018 for allegedly defaming him and prayed to the court to award GH¢25 million against Agyapong to compensate him for the defamatory material published against him by the MP.

However, the court concluded that Agyapong was justified in calling Anas “a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil” and that what Anas was engaged in was not investigative journalism but rather investigative terrorism.

Justice Baah ruled that “I find the claims by the plaintiff [Anas Aremeyaw Anas] meritless and they are hereby dismissed.”
