All You Know About Vemulawada Temple, Rangareddy

The Temple is also known as Rajanna of Vemulawada. As this is in the form of Neela Lohitha Siva Lingam which is known for fulfilling the wishes of the devotees. This temple is located at the center of the town on the top of a small hill. This region has a lot of Historical and religious significance and so is also called Dakshina Kasi, the Southern Banaras because it is as important as Kashi or Banaras on the Northern side for the temple of Lord Shiva.

Vemulawada Rajarajeswra temple is situated 38 km from Karimnagar, in Vemulawada. This popular temple is dedicated to the Lord Rajarajeswra Swamy, which attracts the pilgrimage in large numbers, every year a large number of devotees come to perform a Pooja. The Rajarajeswra Temple of Vemulawada was built by Chalukya kings between 750 A.D and 973 A.D, and these are the houses of various temples dedicated to Lord Sri Rama.

There is the deity of Lakshmana, Goddess Lakshmi, Ganapathy, and Lord Padmanabha Swamy. Surprisingly there is a Muslim mosque inside the temple where all devotees offer prayers. It is believed that if one pulls a bull around the temple their wishes will be fulfilled. The temple got its name the Rajeswara temple because it was built by either Raj Aditya who was the Biruda of Narasimha I, of the Chalukyas of Vemulavada, who was the grandson of Vinay Aditya Yuddhamalla I, or is named after him.

Temple also has a holy tank which is named Dharma Gundam, and that water tank is said to have medicinal properties. The legends have it that in ancient times, the god Indra went to many holy places after killing the Vrithasura but he still couldn’t find purify his life. Then he took the advice from the guru of gods, Brihaspati to visit Sri Raja Rajeshwara kshetram. There he took the holy dip in the dharma-Gundam water tank or lake and took the blessings of lord Sri Raja Rajeshwara and ruled a golden age of history.

There is another story about the Dharma Gundam which tells the story of its construction. Once upon a time, a king named Sri Raja Narendra came to this place while hunting wild animals. But he accidentally killed a Brahmin boy while this was drinking water from the pond. And the king got cursed with an incurable disease by Brahma Hatya, so he went to many holy places and then returned back to this place. And then one day he drank the holy water from the dharma Gundam and slept in the night while praying to the lord Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy on the same night lord comes into his dreams and lord Shiva asked him to take lords existence, the lingam from the dharma-Gundam and installed in a temple.

And on the next day when the king woke up in the morning, he found that his incurable disease got cured automatically. Then he built the steps to the dharma Gundam and built a temple on the hill and installed a Shiva lingam inside the temple. But while he was sleeping in the night the holy sidhas came and established the god’s idol inside the temple. And the king was worried about missing the chance to install the Shiva lingam, god came into this dream and promised that the king’s name will be associated with the place forever.

There are many mythological stories behind it according to people’s beliefs. It is also been said that Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy lingam existed in Krita Yuga, Treta Yuga, and Dwapara Yuga. There are many small temples within this temple. But one of the Important among them is Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy form of Vishnu with Krishna murti in the center and another one dedicated to Sita Ramaswamy. There are also other shrines in the temple which are dedicated to lord Shiva and the goddess Durga.

There is a mosque along with the temple where people offered their prayers but mainly mosques are usually found in separate places as devotees of the respective religions prefer to worship at their own place of worship. So this is the exception and an exception to this is Vemulawada Sri Rajarajeshwari Swamy temple, popularly known as Dakshina Kasi. As the tomb of a Muslim saint is in the temple, both Hindus and Muslims offer their prayers to Lord Shiva and Allah together.
