Tourists can use private transport like cabs to reach the Sanctuary from Medak as it is only 15km far. Once upon a time during Hyderabad Nizam’s rule, the Pocharam forest was reported to be a favorite hunting ground. Pocharam Forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary as early as the beginning of the 20th century.

Pocharam dam was constructed on the Allair river between 1916 – 1922. Hence the sanctuary gets its name from Pocharam Lake. The wildlife sanctuary is spread over 130 square kilometers.

The wildlife sanctuary is surrounded by lush green forests and has rich flora and fauna. Some major attractions to the visitors as Brahminy Bucks, Bar-Headed Goose, and Open Billed Stork. 

The place is an ideal spot for eco-tourism visitors as one can find various species of animals. Some of the rare species of animals like Antelopes, Deer, Wild Dogs, leopards, wolves, Jackal, Forest Cat, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Nilgai, Chinkara, Chital, and four-horned Antelope are found in the wildlife sanctuary. 

October to May is considered the ideal time to visit the wildlife sanctuary. Tourists can book the inspection bungalow at Pocharam and Medak. 

Safari

Tourists can go for a safari or walk in the sanctuary where one has to travel through the marshland. Lanes of water are seen in the forests and they are coming from the dam nearby. So, one needs to be careful while going on a safari. One can witness different kinds of animals like deer, peacocks, butterflies, etc making it an amazing experience. 

Birds

There are all kinds of birds present in the forest ranging from big and small, single-hued and multi-colored. A trip to the wildlife sanctuary is a must especially for the photographers as they can find many species of birds that are not usually present out of the forest.

Pocharam Dam

A little ahead of the sanctuary is a small dam on a tributary of the Manjeera River. Manjeera River is the main source of water supply to Hyderabad. Pocharam dam becomes like a picnic spot, a kind of rudimentary water park for people to enjoy during and post-monsoon.  

The sun setting on the water and people jumping around in the water is an experience to witness. 

Amenities

With all the specialties, the wildlife sanctuary is worth visiting. However, there are no basic facilities like drinking water, accommodation, and toilets. So, visitors should plan well in advance all the required things before visiting the sanctuary. 

The newly formed Medak district administration has been taking necessary steps in developing tourism and generating revenue resources by developing the place.

Modes of Transportation

By Air:

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is the nearest airport to reach Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary. It is at a distance of 146 km far from Medak. The distance to reach Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary from Medak is 13.8 Km. One can avail of Buses/Taxis from Medak to reach the destination.

 By Train:

Although Medak is just 15km far from Pocharam wildlife sanctuary, Medak doesn’t have a railway station. The nearest railway station to Medak is Akkannapet(19.1 Km) & Kamareddy (60 km). These towns have trains to major cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Nanded, Vizag, and Hyderabad, etc.

One can also use Taxis/cabs and buses to reach Medak from the railway station. The Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 13.8 Km from Medak. Tourists can avail of Buses/Taxis available from Medak to reach the destination. 

By Road:

One can use road transport to make their journey easy to reach the wildlife sanctuary. One can find frequent buses to Medak run by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) connecting to Hyderabad, Warangal, Siddipet, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, and Sangareddy. 

One can find buses from all important towns and cities up to Medak. The Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 13.8 Km from Medak. So, tourists can avail of Buses/taxis are available from Medak to reach their destination.
