Suravaram Pratapa Reddy Life History Details

Suravaram Pratap Reddy was a social historian and one of the pioneers of Telangana literature scholar in Sanskrit, Telugu, Urdu, and English languages. He is famous for his research articles, novels, poetry, story writing, and literary criticism.

Pratapa Reddy’s early life

Pratapa Reddy was born on 28th May 1896, in Boraveli, Gadwal. And he passed away on 25th August 1953. Suravaram Pratap’s parents are Rangamma and Naranareddy.

Pratapareddy’s native village is Itikalapadu. There he completed his primary education at his uncle Ramakrishnareddy’s residence in Kurnool. He studied Sanskrit literature and grammar with his teacher Vellala Sankarasastri. Later he pursued his FA at Nizam College, Hyderabad.

Pratapa Reddy obtained BA and BL degrees from Presidency College, Madras. Pratapa Reddy profession is a Poet, Scholar, Freedom Fighter, Social historian and reformer, Lawyer, Journalist, Founder, and Editor of Golconda Patrika a Telugu-language journal. 

He was moved by the illiteracy of the Telangana people. He came to know that Urdu was the ruling language and Telugu had no respect. And, there were no minimal facilities for Telugu people to study their mother tongue.

The police commissioner of Nizam State, Raja Bahaddur Venkatramareddy has employed Pratapareddy as the secretary of Reddy Hostel in Hyderabad. Pratapa Reddy has been successful in establishing a very good library in the hostel and brought activity and discipline among the students.

In 1925, Pratapa Reddy has quit his job to launch a Telugu language journal “Golconda”. His intention was to help the Telangana people and the journal used to be published twice a week.  

He mentioned in one of the editorials of the journal Golconda that his purpose of the journal is to serve the Telugu language in Telangana and to help develop everybody in Telangana without any tribal or caste prejudices. Many of Pratapa Reddy’s articles got published in other journals like Sujata, Shoba, Bharati, etc.

In 1942, Pratapa Reddy has brought out a collection of poems written by 350 Telangana poets and got it published in Golkonda Kavula Sanchika. Pratapa Reddy has done this to answer the question raised by poets from Seemandhra regarding the existence of Telugu poets in the Hyderabad dominion.

Andhrula Saanghika Charitra is considered one of the best works of Pratapa Reddy in social history. This work won him the first award from the central literature academy and got printed continuously 7 times. Moreover, it has been translated into Hindi by Yarlagadda Laxmi Prasad. S. Pratap Reddy represented the State assembly from the Wanaparthy constituency in the district in 1953.

Apart from his literary work, Pratapa Reddy is also well known for his active participation in and leadership of the social and cultural renaissance movement in Telangana during 1920-1948. During that time, Pratapa Reddy defied the Nizam autocracy and worked for the liberation of the people from the horrible feudal cum monarchical dictatorship of the days which prejudiced and oppressed the majority community in the Nizam Hyderabad State and especially the Telugu people of Telangana.

Pratapa Reddy has become the first-ever president of the famous fighting organization of the people – Nizam Andhra Mahasabha – held in 1930 at Jogipet.

Pratapa Reddy was a propagator of the idea of the unity of all Telugu people and was an ardent supporter of the concept and demand of Vishalandhra. He has penned the famous book Telangana Andhrodyamam which is a precious and historical compilation of the cultural, linguistic cum political struggles of the period from the 1920s to 1948 in Telangana.

Pratapa Reddy is well known for his literary work and he has written 40 books in the course of his life. His works include Nizamrashtra Palanam, Mogalayi kathalu, Sanghoddharana, Ucchala Vishadamu, Grandhalayamu, Hinduvula Pandugalu, Haindava Dharmaveerulu, Yuvajana Vignyanam, etc. 

One of his most prominent writing that has raised the spirit in everyone is Andhrula Sanghikacharitra (Social History of Andhras), which won him the prestigious “Kendra Sahitya Academy Award,” a federal Indian government award for literature. In that book, Pratapa Reddy mentioned the thousand years of Telugu’s cultural and social history.
