Kaloji Narayana Rao was born on 9th September 1914 in Rattihalli village in Bijapur district, Karnataka. The real name of Kaloji is Raghuveer Narayan Lakshmi Nath Srinivasa Ramraja Kaloji and popularly called Kaloji or Kalanna. He was a famous freedom fighter in India and also a political activist in Telangana. He is particularly known for his contributions to literature and social works. 

Kaloji Narayana Rao Personal life:

His father Kaloji Rangarao was from Maharashtra and his mother Ramabayamma hails from Karnataka. Kaloji has one elder brother kaloji Rameshwar Rao, who was an Urdu poet and played an important part in Kaloji’s life. Kaloji completed his education in Madikonda and higher education in Warangal and Hyderabad. Kaloji married Rukmini Bai in 1940.

Furthermore, he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan Award in 1992, the second highest civilian honor in the country for his excellent service in the literary and social. He also received an award for the best translation of the Jeevana Gita work in 1968 and Ramakrishna Rao Burgula’s first posthumous tribute was congratulated in 1981. He was also honored with the ‘Praja Kavi’ title. The Telangana government honored kaloji’s birthday on September 9 announced as Telangana Language Day. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Kakatiya University, Warangal in 1992 for his contributions in the field of literature, additionally, he also wrote poetry in Marathi, Kannada, Hindi, and Urdu.

Kaloji Narayana Rao History

He was a great poet and started writing at an early age. He composed his first poem in 1931, he was just a teen and the execution of fighter Bhagat Singh hit hard him and then he evolved as a prominent writer of the country. 

The book Na Godava is a collection of his poems in eight volumes, stories, and translations. Na Kaloji of Godava is unique in style and content both. One of the great Telugu poet Sri Dasaradhi called it a commentary on contemporary history. His other literary works are ‘Kaloji Kathalu’, Manadi Jayam’, ‘Vyavam Parthiva’ ‘Vijayam Thudi, and ‘Telangana Udyama Kavithalu’, and translations, are Na Bharata Desha Yatra ‘ and ‘ Jeevana Gita ‘. 

He was part of the Satyagraha movement, the Osmania University Student Vandemataram movement, the State Congress, Arya Samaj, Andhra Mahasabha (Telangana), and the Anti-Razakar movement. He has fought for a democratic and responsible government. Kaloji’s commitment to human rights made him an active member of the Tarkunde Committee. His most valuable contest was in 1977 against Vengal Rao then Chief Minister who symbolized the ’emergency’ rule in Andhra Pradesh.

He was also a member of the Legislative Council of AP during 1958-1960. He was a founding member of Andhra Saraswatha Parishathu and a member of the Sahitya Academy Andhra Pradesh. He was the president of Telangana Rachayitala Sangham and was a member of the Glossary Committee during the year 1957-1961.

Kaloji donated his body to Kakatiya Medical College after his death on 13th November 2002 which inspired thousands of people to do selfless service.
