India’s top 10 women freedom fighters

While struggling for the freedom of the country, women played a major role and became an inspiration for the country and motivate the other women to participate in the protests. Well, moving through the history of Indian Independence, women have struggled a lot in everything whether it is in education or in the dress-ups. But apart from this, there are several women who sacrificed their lives for the Nation. They dedicate their lives to the freedom of the country, for the country’s independence and their contribution to the nation cannot be forgotten, cannot be ignored.

Here I am listing out the 10 most important Indian Women Freedom Fighters who fought courageously and made a selfless sacrifices. Check out the name mentioned below to know about those bravely Indian women’s freedom fighters.

1. Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu- Naidu was born on 13th February 1879, in Hyderabad city. Her father’s name was Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, and he was the principal of the Nizams College in Hyderabad. Later on, she joined the Indian National movement and became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. She led the two major movements and played a huge role in Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement. She was also elected for the President of the Indian National Congress. She also became the first lady governor of India and Naidu also supported Gandhiji in the Sabarmati pact, Satyagraha Pledge, and Khilafat movement.

2. Rani Laxmi Bai

Rani Laxmi Bai- was born on the 19th of November 1835, in Varanasi. Her name is Manikarnika and her nickname is Manu. She married the king of Jhansi in 1842, at the age of 7, very early, since then she was known as Jhansi ki Rani Laxmi Bai, she fought against the Britishers. Sir Hugh Rose wanted to capture Jhansi in 1858 and demanded the queen to surrender because she was the one, who would not quit easily.

3. Savitri Bhai Phule

Savitri Bhai Phule- was born on 3 January 1831, in Pune. She was illiterate at the starting but worked religiously to improve the condition of women in society. She is known for fighting against the Sati Pratha and child marriage. With the help of her husband, they started India’s first girl’s school in Pune in 1848, where they used to teach the western curriculum of mathematics, science, and social studies. The couple established 18 schools together. Not just this, she also fought for the untouchable people, she opened a well in her house for them to show resistance against the caste system.

4. Rani Gaidinliu

Rani Gaidinliu- the name you might have not heard in the list of freedom fighters before, but Gaidinliu was the one who fought for the Naga tribal region. She was born on 26th January 1915, in the Tamenglong district of Manipur and belonged to the Rongmei tribe or Kabui. She led an armed uprising against the British in the northeast districts of Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam and later joined the Heraka movement.

5. Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali– the famous personality, who fought for the Indian Independence movement, and was the main face behind the Quit India movement in 1942. In the same year, she showed resistance against Britishers by hoisting the Tricolor at the Gowalia Tank Maidan formerly called Azad Maidan now in Bombay in a response to the call to do or die in Quit India Movement. And became Delhi’s first woman mayor in the year 1958.

6. Madam Bhikaji Cama

Madam Bhikaji Cama

Madam Bhikaji Cama- was born on 24 September 1861, and born into a Parsi family. She was an Indian political activist. Later, she started working at the Indian National Congress. On the day of 22 August 1907, she hoist the first version of the Indian flag which is a tricolor of green, saffron, and red stripes at the International Socialist Congress that was held in Stuttgart, Germany.

7. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit

Vijay Lakshmi Pandit

Vijay Lakshmi Pandit- she was born on 8 August 1900 and was a member of the Nehru family and was an active participant in the Indian Independence movement. In 1953 she became the first woman president of the UN General Assembly and a year later, she served as an ambassador to England and Ireland. Later, she became the Governor of Maharashtra. After the passing of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, she stood for the Lok Sabha elections from Phulpur and was in the Parliament till 1968.

8. Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay

Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay

Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay- was born on 3rd April 1903, and was a freedom fighter, apart from this she is also an influencing social activist and a talented actor. She is mainly known for reviving the traditional handicrafts of India after the post-Independence. She also participate in the non-cooperation movement which was launched by Gandhiji in 1923 and also joined the Seva Dal and worked for the social upliftment of the marginalized and poor. Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay was also appointed as the president of the Congress Socialist Party in 1936.

9. Sucheta Kriplani

Sucheta Kriplani

Sucheta Kriplani– was born on 25 June 1908, in Ambala city. Her father S.N. Majumdar was a nationalist and inspired her a lot to become a freedom fighter. She completed her studies at Indraprastha College and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Later, she joined the Indian National Congress in 1936 and became the main part of the Quit India Movement. Moreover, she became a part of the sub-committee which was made to form a charter for the constitution of India.

10. Ramadevi Choudhary

Ramadevi Choudhary

Ramadevi Choudhary– was born on 3 December 1899 in Cuttack, the swadeshi movement was going on when she was a kid. She got married to Deputy Collector Gopabandhu Choudhury, at the age of 15. He later resigned from office to join the Indian National Congress in 1921 and was involved in freedom fighting with Ramadevi. In 1930, Ramadevi was an active participant in the Salt Satyagraha movement from Odisha. She marched to Inchudi and Srijang along with other women to show the resistance against the salt tax.
