US meddling in Bangladesh’s internal affairs: Russia’s Envoy Visit

According to Prothom Alo, citing a statement released by the Russian embassy in Bangladesh, the US ambassador’s visit to Shaheenbagh to meet with the family of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader is an attempt to interfere in the domestic affairs of Bangladesh.

On Thursday, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters at a regular briefing in Moscow that the US ambassador was “consistently attempting to influence domestic processes in the country.”

Ms Zakharova also claimed that the US ambassador is hiding behind the guise of caring about Bangladeshis’ rights, according to Prothom Alo.

Previously, on December 14, the US ambassador paid a visit to the home of BNP leader Sajedul Islam, who went missing about a decade ago.

During the ambassador’s visit, a group of people attempted to ambush Peter D Haas as he walked out of the house. However, with the assistance of his security detail, he was able to leave the area safely.

Following this, Hass held an urgent meeting with Bangladesh Minister of Foreign Affairs AK Abdul Momen, questioning how the details of his visit were leaked.

According to the Prothom Alo report, the US informed the highest level of the Bangladesh government of its concern about the incident involving the US ambassador in Dhaka, Peter Haas.

The subject has also been discussed in Washington. During a meeting with Bangladesh’s ambassador to the US, Mohammad Imran, on December 15, US Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asian Affairs Donald Lu expressed concern about Haas’ safety.

In connection with the same event, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke with Bangladesh Minister of Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam on Thursday (local time) and discussed elections, safety, and security of US embassy personnel.

Previously, “Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke on the phone with Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shahriar Alam. The Deputy Secretary and State Minister discussed the importance of free and fair elections, as well as the safety and security of US embassy personnel “said US Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price.

“Today I had a good conversation with Bangladeshi State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam. We discussed the importance of free and fair elections, as well as the safety and security of US embassy personnel “Sherman took to Twitter.

Previously, on December 19, Momen stated that foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka are safe.

“Our government will provide full protection to all diplomats,” he added.

“The ambassador (Peter Haas) is concerned about his security. Our ambassador stated that there is no reason to be concerned “Momen explained.

Earlier, on December 18, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said there was no shortage of security when US Ambassador Peter Haas visited Shaheenbagh on December 14.

“Police personnel rushed to the scene immediately,” he said.
