An American man who fell off a raft in the Bali River is missing

On Tuesday, the hunt for an American man who drowned after falling into a quickly flowing River while whitewater rafting in Bali, a well-known tourist destination in Indonesia, was reopened. Robinaugh Clifford Neil, 63, was among a party of 10 foreign visitors floating on two rafts on the Ayung River on Monday when they encountered danger in the rugged terrain of Bali’s Ubud district. The water level suddenly surged, creating a strong current that turned one of the rafts over, according to the local police commander Gusti Ngurah Yudistira.

According to Yudistira, the second raft also capsized as the five visitors on it attempted to board it, dumping the entire group of ten into the roaring waters. Nine of the visitors were rescued by two nearby rafting guides, but Neil vanished. After stopping for the night, the search was picked up again Tuesday.

Before beginning the 12-kilometer (7.4-mile) rafting trip, which was to take 2.5 hours with a break halfway down the river, the tourists were all outfitted with life jackets and helmets, and they had been given a safety briefing by lifeguards.
