NEW DELHI: In a significant development at the Moreh Border Town in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, security forces have arrested three illegal Myanmar nationals on Sunday. This arrest comes in the wake of an ongoing ethnic strife in the region, during which houses belonging to the Meitei community were set ablaze by suspected miscreants.

The trio of detainees was found in possession of furniture and electrical items reportedly stolen from these houses.

According to a police report, a team of Manipur Police Special Commandos, conducting a foot patrol in the border town, apprehended the three individuals around 9 am.

Upon verification, it was revealed that the arrested individuals are Myanmar nationals, identified as Khamkhenthang Guite (25) hailing from Namphalong Sawbua II, Aung Mae (30) from Tamu Sawbua X, and 3 Aung Aung (25) from Tamu Sawbua XI.

Subsequently, the detainees were transferred to the custody of the Moreh Police Station for further investigation.

The ethnic conflict that erupted in Manipur on May 3 has forced a substantial number of people to flee their homes after their residences were attacked and set ablaze by unidentified perpetrators. Many of the affected individuals have sought refuge in relief camps established by the government in various valley districts.

Meanwhile, amidst sporadic incidents of violence, the Manipur government has decided to extend the suspension of internet services in the strife-torn northeast state for an additional five days. The internet ban will remain in effect until October 26.
