NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh’s first Cow Sanctuary will be completed within a month in the western UP district of Muzaffarnagar, Union minister of state for fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying Sanjeev Balyan announced on Wednesday.

Balyan, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Muzaffarnagar, made the announcement while addressing the World Animal Day event organized by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in Delhi.

The minister said that the cow Sanctuary will provide care to destitute cows in his constituency. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by animals in modern society, particularly due to mechanization. He stressed the need for society to take responsibility for the well-being of animals.

“It is difficult for a small farmer to care for the male offspring of his cows,” Balyan said, highlighting the struggles faced by small farmers. He also pointed out that even donkeys are becoming less common in cities due to mechanization.

The sanctuary is being built in an area of 70 hectares of land in Chandan village of Purkaji block in Muzaffarnagar. It will provide shelter to over 5000 stray cattle and would help in resolving the menace of stray cattle in the district and neighbouring areas, he had earlier said.

The facility will have an electric crematorium along with bio gas plant.

When the idea of mooted, Balyan had said that the sanctuary will be operated by a committee of local industrialists, social activists and people from different strata of society.
