NEW DELHI: Two witnesses to the murder of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada have said that the perpetrators were wearing Sikh attire under their hoodies.

Malkit Singh, one of the witnesses, described two of the perpetrators as wearing small pugs under their hoodies, with masks covering their bearded faces. Singh, who was playing football at the time, saw the men trying to escape through the Cougar Creek Park in the neighbourhood of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara outside of which he was murdered in Surrey, British Columbia province in June.

Bhupinderjit Singh, another witness, said he heard gunshots and thought they were fireworks at first, but then realized it was likely an attack on Nijjar. Singh, who was holding Nijjar’s body after he was shot, did not see the perpetrators.

Malkit Singh said there were three other men waiting in a silver sedan. “One of the running men pointed his pistol at me right before getting into the car,” he said.

A 90-second CCTV video, which has surfaced recently, shows Nijjar’s pickup truck being pursued by a silver car. The car pulls in front of the truck, blocking its exit, and two masked men get out and open fire.

The witnesses’ accounts raise questions about the investigation into Nijjar’s murder. Bhupinderjit Singh said there was an hour-long tussle between the Surrey Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police over who would lead the investigation.

These revelations come at a time when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused India of committing transnational assassination on Canadian soil. The Trudeau government has said that these allegations are based on investigations conducted by the Five Eyes alliance, which includes Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Indian government has denied any involvement in Nijjar’s murder.
