Women’s clothing found near Nuh temple, cops deny rape claims

NUH (HARYANA): Haryana Police has refuted allegations that women participating in a Hindu procession were molested and raped during the communal clashes in Nuh on July 31.

The allegations were made by some locals and fuelled by a section of media after some articles of women’s clothing were found near the Mahadev Temple in Nalhad village, which came under attack on the fateful day.

The communal violence resulted in six fatalities and left 50 injuries following an episode of stone pelting during the ‘Shobha Yatra’ near the temple.

Situated amidst the sprawling expanse of the Aravalli Hills, the Nalhad Mahadev Temple became the focal point of contention. It is alleged that the attack on the ‘yatra’ was premeditated, with rioters concealed in the hills throwing stones and even firing from the jungle-covered terrain.

Many claimed that some women may be missing or unwilling to report the assaults due to fears for their safety.

Responding to speculations, the Haryana Police issued a statement on Sunday, asserting: “Today, torn clothes of women were found near the temple in relation to the Brij Mandal religious yatra, which has led to the dissemination of reports regarding potential rape cases and the disappearance of Hindu women through YouTube and Twitter. The Nuh police have also received a viral video, which we categorically deny and deem a baseless incident.”

Mamta Singh, ADG (Law and Order) reinforced this stance, addressing the media to declare all such reports as unfounded and mere rumors. She emphasized that on the day of the incident, she personally visited the temple with her contingent and no such untoward incident occurred. Singh urged the public not to lend credence to such unverified claims and refrain from perpetuating unfounded rumors.

She also cautioned that actions could be taken against people propagating such baseless narratives, spreading false news, or generating unwarranted rumors.
