BJD, YSRCP to support Modi govt on Delhi ordinance, no-trust

KOLKATA: Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party will support the Modi government in parliament on the controversial Delhi services bill and the no-trust vote moved by opposition parties.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to overturn a Supreme Court order that gave powers to the Delhi government over transfers and postings of bureaucrats, will be backed by the BJD in both Houses, sources told The New Indian.

Similarly, the YSR Congress Party has already declared its support for the BJP-led Union government in passing the bill which will replace the Delhi service ordinance.

The bill has seen a massive protest from opposition coalition INDIA in the parliament, with Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal going out of the way to ensure it is defeated in the parliament.

Kejriwal personally met several opposition party leaders to seek their support against the bill. During an opposition meeting in Bihar, Kejriwal expressed willingness to join the INDIA alliance, contingent on receiving support from all opposition parties against the bill.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) issued a public statement, declaring that it will not participate in meetings with the Congress until the latter denounces the black ordinance and commits its 31 Rajya Sabha MPs to oppose the bill. AAP emphasized the need for Congress to choose between the interests of Delhi’s people and the Modi government.

During the bill’s introduction in Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah argued that the constitution grants the house the power to pass laws regarding the state of Delhi.

However, soon after its tabling, the opposition vociferously opposed it, citing the bill as “unconstitutional” and the “graveyard of cooperative federalism.”

Separately, INDIA MPs have moved a no-confidence motion against the Modi government, in a bid to force Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak on the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. A debate on the motion will start on August 8 and PM Modi will reply to the opposition two days later.
