(Williamson Herald) – The Old Glory chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented its Women in American History Award to the descendants of Carrie Winder Mcgavock.

Rod Heller, the great-great-grandson of Carrie Winder Mcgavock, along with his wife, Kay, accepted the award with several family members who also attended the ceremony. The award “commemorates and celebrates the vital role of women past and present in American history” and the contributions or difference they made within the community. The award pays tribute to the memory of Carrie Winder McGavock and members of her family who, during and after the Battle of Franklin on Nov. 30, 1864, nursed and cared for hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers.

In the days following the battle, Carrie and her husband, John McGavock, donated a piece of land for a cemetery near the family graveyard where 1,500 deceased Confederate soldiers are buried. Carrie continued to supervise the care of wounded soldiers, identify as many of the deceased soldiers as could be identified and setting the grave markers.

After the war Carrie took in numerous war orphans from New Orleans, where she grew up, and cared for them. She also maintained the Carnton homestead and the Confederate soldiers cemetery until her death on Feb. 22, 1905, at the age of 75, according to…
