Donna Deegan holds firm on Confederate monument removal, pledges infrastrucure improvements
(AOL.Com) – From a song about the Jaguars and critiques of the Mandarin Senior Center speech policies to personal stories about affordable housing and disagreements over Confederate monuments, attendees at Mayor Donna Deegan’s first “community conversation” made their opinions known.
Deegan’s conversation Thursday evening was the first of 14 to take place across the city in each City Council district. The goal for each event, Deegan said, was to allow residents to be honest about what they needed fixed – not for her to come in with a “laundry list” of discussion points.
“I think it was exactly what we needed,” Deegan said after the event. “People want to be able to voice to their representatives what their frustrations are, and you heard a lot of that tonight.”
Deegan promised during her campaign to remain open to the public, and attendees thanked her for “fulfilling the promise.” Some interactions allowed Deegan the chance to tell constituents about her plans while others highlighted disagreements in policy.
