(The Mountaineer) A program titled “Love and Duty: The American Civil War and Confederate Widows” will be hosted by the WNC Civil War Roundtable at 7 p.m. Monday, May 8, at the Haywood County Public Library in Waynesville

Approximately 200,000 women were widowed during the Civil War. They recorded their experiences in diaries, letters, scrapbooks and pension applications. Presenter Dr. Angela Elder will share many Confederate widows’ stories, examining the records of their courtships, marriages, loves and losses to better understand their complicated relationship with the Confederate state.

Elder is an associate professor of history at Converse University, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After graduating from the University of Georgia with her Ph.D. in History, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech.
