On this date in 1792…
Chickamauga Chief Captain Bench, and his followers attacked settlements on the Holston River in Tennessee, killing four people. Formerly a friend to European settlers, Bench left a declaration of war beside the bodies in retaliation for the death of his great uncle, Old Tassel, at the hands of whites.

- 1818 – Troops commanded by General Andrew Jackson seized the Spanish fort at St. Marks in Florida during the First Seminole War.
- 1862 – Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston was Killed at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee.
- 1865 – The Battle of Sayler’s Creek, Virginia.
- 1875 – Cheyenne leader Black Horse is killed while attempting to escape being sent to prison in St. Augustine, Florida for his part in the uprisings in Indian Territory, and Texas. Several of the shots at Black Horse miss him, and hit other Indians in the crowd. The Indians retaliate with a hail of bullets and arrows. Almost half of the Indians flee the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency at Fort Reno in west-central Indian Territory.
- 1936 – An estimated F-4 tornado killed more than 200 people and injured 1,800 in and around Gainesville, Georgia.
- 2012 – An F-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed into side of apartment building in Virginia with no fatalities.
- 1968 – HemisFair 1968 opened in San Antonio, Texas.
