Dust and Dignity: A Glimpse into the Lives of City Sweepers

“We start our day early, around 5 AM, meeting up to sweep the streets and keep our city clean. We take pride in our work and support each other through tough times.

It’s not always easy. The heat can be unbearable in the summers, and the unseasonal rain makes our job harder. But we don’t give up. We keep working, always with a smile. Sometimes we take breaks under a tree, sharing gossip and our daily life stories. We’re more than coworkers; we’re close friends.

However, it feels disheartening when the riders passing by react with irritation rather than understanding our jobs while we sweep the roads. Some don’t even offer a bottle of water when requested on the streets in the afternoon during the summer heat. Despite these challenges, we continue our work, knowing that we do it all for our families, striving for a better life for them.

Next time you see us, remember our stories. We’re mothers, daughters, and friends, united by our love for this city. Though not always recognized or appreciated, we’re always here, working hard to keep Hyderabad beautiful.”
