Threads of Time: Pochampally’s Enduring Craft and Culture

“Namaste! I’m a proud Pochampally Handloom weaver. Our hometown, Pochampally, was recognized as one of the world’s top village tourism spots by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) last year.

Weaving a Pochampally saree isn’t just a craft; it’s a tradition passed down over 180 years. As I sit at my loom, it’s like painting with threads, telling the tales of our culture. But today, our traditional handloom faces challenges, and us young weavers are determined to preserve this precious art.

Our craft’s heart lies in the raw materials from Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Despite the rise of power looms, we stand strong, infusing each piece with love and quality. Pochampally sarees represent more than fabric; they represent our dedication and heritage.

Yes, we’ve faced challenges, especially during the pandemic. But we’re resilient, bouncing back with more passion. I promise to honor this age-old tradition and inspire the generations to come.

I request the younger generation to support us by wearing handloom clothes at least once a week so we can enhance our skills the art of handloom weaving—a blend of history, culture, and timeless beauty.”

Let’s keep the looms humming and the legacy thriving!
