In March 2021, the United States Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that officials at Georgia Gwinnett College wrongfully told a Christian student to stop talking about religion.

This week, the College has been ordered to pay the student $800,000 in damages.

Georgia Gwinnett College is now paying the price after campus police stopped Christian student Chike Uzuegbunam from speaking about his faith or distributing Christian literature on campus in 2016, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) announced on Wednesday.

College officials had repeatedly stopped Uzuegbunam from peacefully sharing his Christian faith with his fellow students on campus, and told the student that he needed to make an advance reservation to speak in one of two tiny campuses’ “speech zones” that were only open a few hours per week…

Last year, arguments for the case were heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled 8-1 in favor of the Christian students.

“After more than five years of litigation and an important mid-litigation Supreme Court victory for Chike Uzuegbunam and Joseph Bradford, Georgia Gwinnett College officials have agreed to settle the case, giving Uzuegbunam and Bradford the justice they were seeking all along,” ADF said.

ADF Senior Counsel Travis Barham added that “this settlement represents a victory not only for Chike and Joseph but also for many other students who wish to exercise their constitutionally protected freedoms on the campuses of Georgia’s public colleges and universities.”

Religious speech of any sort is a sore spot with many colleges and universities which are not affiliated with any faith. True free speech on a number of topics can be as well.

But that does not mean that students can be denied the right to both.

The fact that such a case was brought before the court is a violation of the founding principles of the nation. That there was even one dissenting justice is a disgrace.
