Delhi HC Ask ED Response: K. Kavitha’s Bail Plea

The Delhi High Court has taken notice of the bail plea filed by K. Kavitha, a prominent leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged excise policy scam. This development comes after her regular bail pleas were rejected by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court on May 6. The denial of bail was based on the gravity of the offense, the nature of allegations, and the overall seriousness of the case.

Presently, Kavitha remains in judicial custody until May 20 in the case pursued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and until May 14 in the one led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Delhi High Court has directed the ED to respond to Kavitha’s bail plea, scheduling the next hearing for May 24.

The investigation into the matter is deemed crucial by the special court, particularly concerning the roles of public servants, private individuals, and the flow of illicit funds. Allegations against Kavitha suggest her involvement as the primary conspirator in a scheme aimed at providing upfront money to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in exchange for favorable provisions in the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

Kavitha’s plea for bail highlighted health concerns, specifically citing hypertension and the need for medical care following her arrest by the ED. However, the court noted that the medical records provided were outdated and that her health complaints had already been addressed.

Kavitha’s arrest initially occurred on April 11 by the ED, followed by another arrest by the CBI while she was held in Tihar Jail. These events underscore the seriousness of the allegations against Kavitha and the ongoing legal proceedings aimed at determining her involvement in the alleged Excise Policy Scam.
