Development of Mobile App Underway for Zoo Park Visitors

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) and Chief Wildlife Warden MC Pargaien recently conducted an inspection at Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) in Hyderabad, where they evaluated various activities and initiatives implemented by park officials.

During the visit, they assessed the progress of a mobile app currently in its final stages of development. This app aims to enhance the visitor experience by providing guidance, education, and awareness on conservation and wildlife topics.

Issues regarding the Health and well-being of zoo animals were also addressed, particularly concerning the contamination of water from Mir Alam tank, which passes through NZP via channels and drains. The water, tainted with heavy metals like Nitrates and Molybdenum, poses significant health risks to the animals.

The PCCF indicated plans to raise this matter with the Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) to advocate for the construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) near the Tiger Safari area and pool area. These STPs would be integrated into the Musi Riverfront Development Plan to ensure that water entering the zoo remains uncontaminated, safeguarding the health of zoo inhabitants.

Additionally, Pargaien engaged with zoo visitors, including schoolchildren, to gather feedback for enhancing zoo services. Directives were given to the zoo curator to provide immediate measures for animal protection against heat stress, including the provision of shade and ample water.

Efforts to transfer a tiger and an Indian bison to Kakatiya Zoo in Warangal were discussed, with the Director of NZP urged to expedite the process after liaising with the Central Zoo Authority. The review also encompassed the initiatives undertaken by Zoo Staff concerning animal treatment and health.

Key personnel including Zoo Curator Sunil Hiramath, Deputy Curator A Nagamani, Forest Range Officers (FROs) Satish and Laxman, and other zoo staff actively participated in the review meeting.
