Over 100 Lives Lost and 150 Injured in Tragic Wedding Fire in Iraq

A tragic incident unfolded in Iraq’s Nineveh province as a devastating fire erupted during a wedding celebration in the Hamdaniya district. The catastrophic event claimed the lives of more than 100 individuals, while around 150 others suffered injuries.

Rescue efforts persisted well into the early hours of Wednesday, as civil defense teams combed through the scorched remains of the building in a desperate search for survivors. Nineveh’s Deputy Governor, Hassan al-Allaq, confirmed the grim toll, reporting that 113 people had lost their lives. State media, however, suggested the death toll might exceed 100, with an additional 150 individuals injured.

The Fire engulfed a sizable events hall in the northeastern region, reportedly ignited by fireworks set off during the celebratory occasion. Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene, recounting how they witnessed the flames rapidly consuming the hall. Some attendees managed to escape, but many others were tragically trapped inside. Imad Yohana, a 34-year-old survivor, shared his harrowing experience, saying, “We saw the fire pulsating, coming out of the hall. Those who managed got out and those who didn’t got stuck. Even those who made their way out were broken.

Video footage captured by a Media correspondent on-site depicted firefighters battling the aftermath, navigating through the charred remnants of the structure while their lights pierced the smoldering ruins.

Initial assessments suggested that the building had been constructed using highly flammable materials, which contributed to its rapid and catastrophic collapse, according to state media reports.

In response to the emergency, ambulances and medical teams were swiftly dispatched by both federal Iraqi authorities and Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, as detailed in official statements.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene recounted that the fire broke out at approximately 10:45 p.m. local time, with hundreds of people in attendance during the Tragic Incident.
