Women Voters Vital for Telangana Election Victory

Women voters are poised to play a pivotal role in the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections, with over half of the Assembly constituencies boasting more than 50 percent female voters. Recent data, as of September 18, 2023, reveals that a total of 66 constituencies have female voter majorities. Impressively, twenty out of the 33 districts in the state have more than 50 percent women voters, with Nizamabad district leading the pack at 52.1 percent, closely followed by Jagtial, Nirmal, Kamareddy, Khammam, Medak, Rajanna Sircilla, and Bhadradri, each with over 51 percent women voters. Women voters constitute 49.84 percent of the electorate across Telangana.

Amongst the constituencies, Balkonda stands out with the highest percentage of women voters at 53.7 percent, trailed by Nizamabad Rural at 53.2 percent and Armoor at 53.1 percent. On the other hand, Serilingampally records the lowest at 46.8 percent, with Jubilee Hills not far behind at 46.9 percent.

It’s worth noting that in the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections, Women Voters made a significant impact, with more than 1.02 crore women casting their votes across the state, surpassing men by approximately 4,700 votes. In 2018, despite 2.5 lakh more men being enrolled as voters, women voters turned out in higher numbers in several key constituencies, including Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Rajanna Sircilla, Siddipet, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Mahbubnagar, Wanarpathy, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Khammam. Even in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, constituencies such as Kukatpally, Nampally, Serilingampally, Uppal, Pattancheru, Medchal, Quthbullapur, Sanath Nagar, and LB Nagar saw more women exercising their voting rights than men.

In recognition of the importance of women voters, the Congress has already announced the Mahalakshmi scheme, which promises monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 to women. Additionally, LPG gas cylinders will be available to women for just Rs 500, and free travel on TSRTC buses across the state will be facilitated. On the other hand, the BRS government has been rolling out schemes targeted at women, including the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which offers 2BHK houses.

Notably, the BRS government is highlighting initiatives like the KCR kit scheme, nutrition kits, and the Amma Vodi Scheme, among others. However, it’s worth mentioning that the BRS has nominated only seven women candidates out of 115 constituencies.

Meanwhile, the BJP aims to leverage the Women’s Reservation Bill to make inroads in the state. This bill, which advocates gender justice, will be a focal point of the BJP’s 2024 campaign, similar to their emphasis on the triple talaq ordinance during the 2019 polls. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, more women than men exercised their right to vote, underscoring the significance of women’s participation in the electoral process.
