Hyderabad’s Stadium Gears Up for ICC World Cup

Preparations are in full swing at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, set to host three ICC Men’s World Cup matches from October 6, along with two warm-up games.

The World Cup trophy, currently on tour in India, was displayed at the stadium, which has received a facelift. While some work on seating and other areas is ongoing, the stadium will be ready before the first warm-up game between Pakistan and New Zealand on September 29, according to K Durga Prasad, assisting the Supreme Court-appointed judge L Nageswara Rao.

Efforts are being made to enhance the stadium’s spectator-friendliness. Floodlights have been installed, and seating at ground level is being revamped. Due to time constraints, a complete seating overhaul wasn’t possible, but over 10,000 seats have been replaced, with the rest scheduled to be done after the World Cup Matches.

The canopy on the south, damaged in previous heavy rains, has been restored, and a new one on the Eastern Stand has been completed. The Western Stand’s canopy will be tackled post-World Cup.

Hyderabad will provide free drinking water to all spectators, update public bathrooms, and complete drainage works. New turnstiles have been installed at the entry points.

Regarding spectator attendance for the Pakistan vs. New Zealand warm-up game on September 29, the final decision rests with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Hyderabad will host consecutive matches on October 9 and 10, and officials are confident about the arrangements. Ground staff, led by YL Chandrasekhar, have worked diligently to prepare facilities, including practice nets at Gymkhana and a newly laid ground for practice matches.
