Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture has granted approval for the Music Home School of Art in Riyadh to offer the country’s inaugural diploma course in music. The announcement was made by Moataz Al-Shabanah, the executive director of the school, alongside Noha Kattan, deputy minister for national partnerships and development at the Ministry of Culture, and other influential figures from the media and music industry.
Scheduled to commence in September, this two-year diploma program represents a significant step in promoting Saudi Arabia’s musical culture, encompassing traditional instruments such as the oud, duff, rebab, and mizmar, commonly associated with celebrations in the Kingdom. The curriculum will encompass both education and performance aspects, equipping graduates for careers as educators or professionals in the field.
The introduction of this diploma course is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry to cultivate the Music industry within the country. The Saudi Music Commission recently launched the Oud House project in Riyadh, welcoming applications from individuals interested in mastering Arab musical instruments. Oud House, led by maestro Naseer Shamma, will serve as a training center, offering lectures and workshops on instruments like the flute, bezel, cello, and violin.

The project’s objectives include the promotion of Arab culture, raising awareness of the oud’s cultural significance, and fostering a global community of skilled musicians. Following their training and rehearsals, students will have the opportunity to participate in concerts, further enriching the cultural landscape of Saudi Arabia.
