AIMIM President Calls for Ban on Uttarakhand Mahapanchayat Amid Communal Tensions

The President of AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen), Asaduddin Owaisi, has called for a ban on the Mahapanchayat (grand assembly) organised by right-wing groups in Uttarakhand on June 15. Owaisi sought an immediate ban on the Mahapanchayat and urged authorities to safeguard the safety of inhabitants in the region in a tweet. He also demanded that steps be taken to reintegrate people who had fled the neighbourhood.

Owaisi also reminded the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) government of its responsibilities to capture the perpetrators and restore regional peace. The Mahapanchayat is being prepared in Purola, Uttarkashi, in the midst of continuous communal tensions. Posters in Purola market have appeared threatening Muslim traders to close their shops and leave the state by june 15.

On May 26, two people, one Muslim and one Hindu, were accused of attempting to kidnap a 14-year-old girl. Some organisations claimed it was an example of ‘Love Jihad.’ Despite the fact that the accused were detained, right-wing groups conducted rallies and targeted Muslim-owned businesses and houses.

On May 29, protests in Purola turned violent as agitators attacked Muslim-owned businesses. A similar protest, organised by the Yamuna Ghati Hindu Jagriti Sangathan, took place on June 3rd, with hundreds of people.
