Telangana to soon have CCTV cameras on all school buses

The School Education Department will soon make CCTV cameras mandatory in all state school buses, particularly those operated by private schools, in an effort to ensure students’ safety and security. It is the school management’s responsibility to install CCTV cameras and digital video recorders on the bus’s front and rear end.

In addition to CCTVs, GPS is likely to be required on school buses. With this system, parents and school officials will be able to track the location of the bus in real time. The State government has been notified of this proposal, and an order is expected shortly.

School Education and Transport Departments will oversee implementation in schools, including those affiliated with SSC, CBSE, ICSE, etc.

In addition to safety and security measures, the department plans to upload details of private schools affiliated with different boards to its website. Among the details are: whether the school is affiliated with any board, if so, up to what class, extra classes, if any, and the school’s address.

A total of 12,000 private schools function across the State, enrolling close to 30 lakh students. By making school details public, parents and students can find out whether a school has been recognized by the government and affiliated with the school board concerned.

This comes during an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a four-year-old girl by the school principal’s driver in Banjara Hills, in which the School Education Department found that the school had permission for only Class V but that classes were being run for Class VI and VII as well as CBSE syllabus was introduced without permission.

The State government has instructed the School Education department to take appropriate action against the school management since it was a clear violation of the rules.
