PNB Scam: Dhanesh Sheth, Close Aide to Mehul Choksi, Gets Bail For One Lakh

In the latest update in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, the trial court has granted bail to Dhanesh Vrajlal Sheth. He was the managing director of three firms that have been accused in the multi-crore fraud case and a close aide to the fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi.

Sheth’s Lawyer Accuses CBI Of Firing From Judge’s Shoulder

As per the latest reports, during the hearing of the case on Monday, Sheth’s lawyer Vijay Agarwal said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was trying to “fire from the shoulder of the judge”.

He said that a supplementary charge sheet was filed by the CBI. Following this, summons were issued by the court and cognizance was taken on June 15 this year.

He also argued in the court that the investigation was completed in the present case and a charge sheet was filed without the arrest of the accused person. This (reportedly) depicts that there wasn’t a need for custodial interrogation which happened in the case of Sheth.

During the hearing, he also spoke about the fact that a company cannot be represented until an application is filed under section 305 CrPc. He said that it has been three years since the person accused in the case has been arrested.
“And now the CBI is trying to fire from the shoulder of the judge’, Sheth said.

CBI Charged Choksi Of Criminal Conspiracy, Destruction of Evidence and Cheating

Reports suggest that the CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet last month accusing Mehul Choksi of criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and cheating. Choksi is currently in the custody of the Dominican Police for illegal entry into the Caribbean nation. He was granted bail on Monday on medical grounds.

The CBI charge sheet revealed that Choksi had informed his associate that they might get in into the radar of the Enforcement Directorate. However, this had happened two months before he left India in January 2018.
