Oregon health officials Thursday announced 1,836 new coronavirus cases and 12 deaths.

In a newly-released report, the state said that of the nearly 12,000 new cases in the week ending Sept. 18, nearly 2,800, or 23%, were among those who had been vaccinated against the disease. That’s the highest rate since the week ending July 24, though the percentage has always hovered around 20%.

“As COVID-19 cases have increased across Oregon, vaccine breakthrough cases have also increased, but at a much lower rate than in the unvaccinated,” the state wrote. “Vaccination remains the most effective tool to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

Of 2.5 million fully vaccinated Oregonians, just under 22,900 have contracted COVID-19.

“The number of vaccine breakthrough cases identified in Oregon remains very small,” the health authority said.

To date, 204 people in Oregon have died after getting COVID-19 despite being vaccinated against the disease. Their average age is 81.

Who died: Oregon’s 3,650th death connected to the coronavirus is a 58-year-old Lane County woman who tested positive Sept. 10 and Died Sept. 21 at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital.

The 3,651st fatality is a 59-year-old Lane County woman who tested positive Sept. 7 and died Sept. 21 at Mckenzie-Willamette Medical Center.

Oregon’s 3,652nd fatality is a 59-year-old Lane County woman who tested positive Sept. 6 and died Sept. 21 at Mckenzie-Willamette Medical Center.

The 3,653rd fatality is a 41-year-old Washington County man who tested positive Sept. 17 and died Sept.17 at his residence.

Oregon’s 3,654th fatality is a 70-year-old Umatilla County woman who tested positive Sept. 5 and died Sept. 19 at St. Anthony Hospital.

The 3,655th fatality is a 93-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Sept. 10 and died Sept. 21 at Salem Hospital.

Oregon’s 3,656th fatality is a 79-year-old Lane County man who tested positive Sept. 15 and died Sept. 20 at Mckenzie-Willamette Medical Center.

The 3,657th fatality is an 81-year-old Klamath County man who tested positive Sept. 7 and died Sept. 19 at Sky Lakes Medical Center.

Oregon’s 3,658th fatality is an 83-year-old Jackson County man who tested positive Sept. 8 and died Sept. 20 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

The 3,659th fatality is a 63-year-old Jackson County man who tested positive Aug. 20 and died Sept. 21 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

Oregon’s 3,660th fatality is a 72-year-old Jackson County man who tested positive Aug. 6 and died Sept. 10 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

The 3,661st fatality is an 84-year-old Clatsop County woman who tested positive Sept. 11 and died Sept. 18 at her residence.

All those who died either had underlying medical conditions or the state was confirming whether they did.

Hospitalizations: 885 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are hospitalized, down 54 from Wednesday. That includes 263 people in intensive care, down seven from Wednesday.

Vaccines: Oregon reported 7,964 newly administered doses, which includes 3,924 administered Wednesday and the remainder from previous days.

Since it began: Oregon has reported 318,914 confirmed or presumed infections and 3,661 deaths, among the lowest per capita numbers in the nation. To date, the state has reported 5,045,926 vaccine doses administered, fully vaccinating 2,483,452 people and partially vaccinating 234,466 people.
