Andrew Bowie has since deleted the tweet after critics said it was insensitive

A Scottish Tory MP has been accused of showing ‘a shocking lack of sympathy’ over floods battering the country after appearing to mock people for talking about it on Twitter.

Referring to presidential nominee Joe Biden picking his running mate last night, Andrew Bowie tweeted: ‘The whole world tweeting about #KamalaHarris and #JoeBiden2020…except it seems Edinburgh…where apparently it’s raining.’

Bowie represents Aberdeenshire, where a train derailed this morning, leaving at least two dead including the driver, according to unconfirmed reports.

He made the comments on Tuesday night, before the tragedy occurred but when huge parts of Scotland were submerged in water, causing damage to homes and cars.

Conservative MP has been criticised for suggesting people should care more about US politics than serious floods which damaged homes and cars

More than a month’s worth of rain fall in Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen and other parts of the country overnight. It is thought a landslip could have caused the train accident on the line between Aberdeen and Dundee, though investigations are ongoing.

The tweet has since been deleted, but not before residents expressed their anger over the ‘insensitive’ comment.

One person said: ‘The whole of Scotland tweeting about the epic thunder storm battering the country … except it seems @AndrewBowie_MP … where he’s mocking us for not talking about US Politics’.

Another tweeted: ‘Really? Half of Fife is underwater. Hospital staff have lost their cars. The Fife coastal path is very damaged in places. Tell me why we should be more bothered about what’s happening halfway across the world?’

Residents were not impressed with the tweet given the severity of the flooding

A third person said: ‘Just to update on the damage since you think discussing US politics trumps that. So far, flooding on railways, cars submerged, lighting storm has set a house on fire. Some pupils scheduled to return to school can’t (you’ve been making a big fuss over delays to schools resuming).’

Bowie has not responded to criticism from the tweet, though he has spoken about the train incident.

‘It’s obviously a terrible situation, a train derailment, the emergency services are on the scene’ he told reporters.

‘I’ve already spoken to Grant Shapps, who has spoken to Network Rail and the British Transport Police, who are obviously investigating and assisting.

‘I am aware that Aberdeen Royal Infirmary has declared a major incident.’
