11 years in jail: Asif Ali Zardari's fortunes take a turn after wife Benazir Bhutto's murder


Islamabad: Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as the President of Pakistan for the second time. The polling in the National Assembly and Legislative Assemblies on Saturday went in his favor. Today he took the oath of the presidency. Zardari is the first leader in Pakistan to become president for the second time. Also, he was the first president who completed his five-year tenure from 2008 to 2013. Zardari got 244 votes in this election, while his rival Mahmood Khan Aykai got 199 votes.

After the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, her husband Asif Ali Zardari was jailed on charges of corruption, kidnapping and murder. They had to stay in jail for 11 years. Looking at Pakistan's history, it didn't look like they would be able to reach the top again.

US Ambassador Peterson wrote in his letter that Pervez Musharraf did not want Asif Ali Zardari to become the Prime Minister. So Benazir Bhutto was made Prime Minister. Asif Ali Zardari was made President in 2008.

Asif Ali Zardari was born in 1955 in a zamindar family of Mirpur Khas princely state of yesteryear. He graduated in Business Administration from the London School of Economics. His father Hakeem Ali Zardari was also a descendant of Bhayat of Mirpur Khas princely state. They had vast land-holdings.

He was also a member of Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman's Awami National Party, which was established in East Pakistan at that time.
